J.D. and his Volcano!

One of J.D.'s newest fascinations is volcanoes. He reads books about them and loves to look at any pictures he can find of them.
Ever since our trip to Montana we have told him that we would take him to see a volcano that is close to us. And thankfully he had been very patient with us as he waited for the right day to come. . . and today was the day! The sun actually out this morning so we packed a picnic lunch and headed for the volcano (Mt. St. Helens)!
We went north up to Castle Rock and headed east, which was a way that I had never gone before. When family from back east came to visit we always went through Woodland and saw Windy Ridge and Spirit Lake, which does not have a view of the crater. So I was excited to see the inside of the crater.

Mt. St. Helens with very little cloud cover!

Getting closer!

Inside the blast zone

After eating our lunch in the truck we headed to the observatory...which we found out you had to pay per adult...when did that happen?! But we paid anyways, knowing how much J.D. was looking forward to this day.

And when we got to the observatory deck the volcano was completely covered by clouds...well except for its peaks.

Needless to say, I didn't get to see the inside of the crater.

We took a walk (which was J.D.'s favorite part of the day) around to look at the different views of the area.

Pretending not to be excited

A happy ending to our day at the volcano
